Young at Heart

For anyone who hasn’t heard of the documentary Young at Heart, a hit last year about a senior choir that sings modern rock, punk, pop, and rap songs, here’s a video that you’re sure to enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_n0zvoHlVk. It features Fred Knittle singing Coldplay’s Fix You. And speaking of choirs, at TVN they just started one up, so expect some hilarity a la Young at Heart coming at you in Life’s Waltz!

Have any of y’all seen Young at Heart? What was your impression? What was the portrayal of seniors in the film? Was it just cutesy and gimmicky and once again stereotyping (“old people are cute”), or was it intended to transcend expectations?

What other media have you seen about old people in recent years? What was your impression from it? What’s your impression of our American (or your own country’s) culture’s perception and stereotypes of seniors? What do you think of this?

I loved Young At Heart. I don't think that it reinforced negative stereotypes about the elderly at all! It told the story of a group of people seeking real community in spite of all kinds of barriers (illness, death, and subtle and not-so-subtle forms of agism they face daily). It was a beautiful glimpse at a wonderful community, I felt. See it if you haven't!

I saw a clip from Young at Heart--the choir singing Forever Young to lifers in a prison yard. Although I'm not generally a sap, I stood by myself in my living room transfixed, tears rolling down my face. I'm not sure why it was so affecting.
